For over three decades, the YWCA Cambridge’s Women of Distinction event has been a staple celebration and recognition of extraordinary women in our community. Since its inception in 1994 by Kim Decker, CEO, and Norma McDonald Ewing, Board President, the Women of Distinction event has become a cornerstone in Cambridge, honouring those who work tirelessly to create impact, amplify voices, support others, and push boundaries in their respective fields.
This year marked the 30th anniversary of this inspiring event, and we elevated the guest experience to new heights. The evening began with a captivating performance by the Cambridge Youth Symphony Orchestra during the cocktail hour, setting a tone of elegance and celebration. As guests mingled, live illustration artist Anjoonie captured the essence of the night in real-time. The excitement continued with a bustling live auction, a lively photo booth, and other engaging activities.
A highlight of the evening was the fireside chat with Canada’s own R&B icon, Jully Black. In an intimate and inspiring conversation, Jully shared insights on remaining relevant, staying true to one’s purpose, standing in one’s truth, and celebrating personal achievements. Her words resonated deeply with everyone present, encouraging us all to lean into the good work we are doing.
And of course, the real highlight of the evening was the opportunity to recognize these six Woman of Distinction Award recipients:
Kim Fowler
Ruth Cameron
Cheryl MacInnes
Lee Ann Hundt
Jill Summerhayes, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award
Marjorie Knight, recipient of the President’s Award
The night was a beautiful celebration of the countless accomplishments achieved over the past 30 years. We are profoundly grateful to all the award recipients, both past and present, who continue to inspire and support our mission. To our guests, thank you for your unwavering support and for cheering on YWCA Cambridge and each other. Here’s to many more years of celebrating the incredible women who make our community stronger.
Thank you to our event sponsors who continue to show up for us, support us and support the ever-changing but important work we continue to do for women, girls and gender diverse folks.
