She Talks Profile: Meaghan Martin

Feb 11, 2018 | Blog

We’re really excited to represent Waterloo Region in this week’s She Talk interview! Meet Meaghan Martin: Assistant to Member of Provincial Parliament Michael Harris, Public Speaker, Child Welfare Advocate Founder of Sleep Tight Waterloo Region and SO much more. Here’s just a tidbit or two but trust us, you’ll want to hear her story in full on April 30!

What’s your personal or professional motto?

Never give up and to never let self-doubt creep in…follow your instincts! I remind myself of this often because if I had given up wanting a better future for myself at the age of 15 when I chose to find help and enter foster care, I really don’t know where I would be today.

What does the world need more of? Less of?
Our world needs more ACTION and less social media! The days of posting about what needs to happen are over…we need to get out there and turn our words – our keystrokes – into much needed action!

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
That not everyone is going to like you and that is ok. It’s better to be true to yourself than do what others expect or want of you.

What’s an issue in the world that you wish more people were talking about/trying to find a solution for?
I wish more people would talk more about the incredible resilience of our children and youth in foster care instead of the negative statistics stacked against them. When we continue to talk about the negatives that becomes all we believe.

In moments of self-doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up again?
I reflect on how far I have come. How hard I worked to knock down the barriers surrounding me and how I truly believed in myself then – times that were some of my lowest points – so why stop believing now?
