Summer Camp Changes 2026

Frequently Asked Questions Asset 10

We are thrilled to announce an exciting enhancement to our Summer Camp programming for 2026! We are expanding our camp offerings within our high quality, licensed child care settings and transitioning away from the traditional, all-outdoor model we have offered in previous years at Shade’s Mills Conservation Area. This change allows us to create an even more inclusive, robust, and consistently high-quality experience for every camper, regardless of the weather.

Why are we making this change?

A: This shift is all about elevating the camper experience and ensuring a safe, supportive, and activity-rich environment that meets the diverse needs of all our participants.

    • Enhanced Safety and Comfort: Moving to licensed child care settings provides us with dedicated indoor facilities and access to modern amenities like air-conditioned classrooms (AC). This means activities can continue comfortably and safely, even during inclement weather or extreme heat.
    • More Consistent Programming: We can offer a more reliable and diverse curriculum of activities by blending indoor and outdoor fun, focusing on skill-building, active exploration, and specialty themes every week.
    •  Increased Accessibility: Our new locations are often more centrally located and accessible to the broader Cambridge community, making it easier for families to participate.
  • Maintaining Affordability: The costs associated with operating an outdoor camp have continued to increase in recent years. This new model will allow us to maintain affordable, accessible camp fees, while not losing any of the quality programming and fun YWCA Cambridge summer camps are known for.

What will the camp experience look like?

How is the new camp better than the all-outdoor model?

While we cherish the memories created over the decades spent at Shade’s Mills, the new structure allows us to offer more specialized and resilient programming:

    • Guaranteed Indoor Facilities: Campers will always have a comfortable, safe indoor space for activities and shelter from the elements.
    • Focus on Skill-Building & Exploration: Programming will move beyond being purely nature-centered (fishing, boating) to include a wide range of engaging activities like STEM, arts, sports, and cooking through our weekly specialty themes.
    • Daily Outdoor Fun: We remain committed to nature and active play! Campers will spend a minimum of 2 hours outdoors daily (weather permitting), with a goal to maximize time outside through playground use, sports, and outdoor games.
  • Extended hours! We know the 4:00 p.m. end time of summer camp at Shade’s Mills was a challenge for many families. Our 2026 centre-based summer camps will run until 4:00 p.m. daily, with the extended hours and our centres being open till 6:00pm (Although, indoor camp at Wesley United Church will continue running on a 7:30a.m. – 5:00 p.m. schedule).
How are the camp experiences the same?

We are bringing the spirit of fun, friendship, and inclusivity from our all-outdoor camp programming to our new locations!

  • Focus on Fun & Friendship: The core mission remains: fostering positive relationships, following camper interests, and ensuring an action-packed, memorable summer.
  • Specialty Themes & Activities: We will continue to feature exciting, hands-on, weekly specialty themes (see details below) to keep things fresh and engaging.
  • Outdoor Experiences: While we won’t be outdoors all day, we are committed to nature exposure. We plan a field trip every week, which may include visits to local conservation areas, parks, or aquatic centres.
Will my child still get water play and swimming?

Yes! We love water play and plan to incorporate it frequently at our sites. Furthermore, we will actively seek to include swimming/water experience trips as part of our weekly field trip schedule.

My child loved the unstructured, natural aspect of Shade’s Mills. How will you replicate that freedom and connection to nature?

We recognize the unique value of free play and nature exploration! We ensure a blend of structure and freedom through:

  • Free-Choice Activities: Our daily schedule includes a “Camper’s Choice” time where children can direct their own play.
  • Creative Outdoor Spaces: We use the large, accessible outdoor playgrounds and fields at our sites, which provide ample space for creative games, imaginative play, and sport.

Outdoor Focus: Our minimum of two hours outside daily (weather permitting) focuses on active, child-led play rather than just a structured lesson.

Staffing and Supervision

Will the camp staff be the same as it was at Shade’s Mills?

We are committed to maintaining the high-quality staff and spirit of our camp.  We are hoping that many of our experienced summer camp staff, supervisors, and leaders are excited to transition to the new locations! Additionally, our new sites within licensed child care settings mean we are leveraging the expertise of our full-time, professionally trained Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and child care staff, providing an even higher level of supervision and educational excellence.

What is the staff-to-camper ratio at the new locations?

Our ratios will strictly adhere to the provincial regulations for licensed child care settings for maximum safety and engagement.

  • Kindergarten Group (4-6 years): 1 staff for every 13 campers (1:13)
  • School Age Group (6-12 years): 1 staff for every 15 campers (1:15) This ensures every child receives the support and attention they need.

Facilities and Safety

What are the indoor facilities like?

Our camp is hosted within licensed child care centres and school classrooms. This means campers will have access to dedicated school classrooms, climate-controlled spaces including:

  • Air-Conditioned Classrooms: Used for themed activities, focused projects, and as a necessary cool-down space on hot days.
  • School Gymnasiums (non-AC): Ideal for large group games, sports, and active play regardless of rain.
  • Dedicated Washrooms and access to full facility amenities. This setup is a significant positive change, ensuring activities are never cancelled due to weather.
What security measures are in place since the camp is now in a school/child care setting?

Safety is our top priority. Our locations follow strict security protocols:

  • All exterior doors are locked during program hours.
  • Campers are signed in and out by pre-authorized guardians only.
  • Staff are clearly identifiable and follow a specific protocol for monitoring entrances/exits and visitor access.
  • All staff undergo thorough background checks (Vulnerable Sector Checks) and extensive training, including First Aid/CPR.

Inclusion, Support, and Registration

Is the YWCA Cambridge Summer Camp still an inclusive environment?

Absolutely! We remain deeply committed to providing an inclusive environment where all children feel welcome and supported.

  • Dedicated Support Staff: We plan to have support staff onsite at each location.
  • Specialized Supervision: Our Behaviour and Inclusion Supervisor will continue to visit and provide guidance and supports at all camp sites.
  • Individualized Plans: Inclusion plans will be developed to provide staff with specific strategies to support campers with complex needs, ensuring a successful and positive camp experience.
Do you provide 1:1 care?

We do not provide 1:1 care. We believe in working closely with families during the intake process to determine if our group setting is the best fit for your child’s safety and ability to fully participate. If a family or community member volunteer is available to provide 1:1 support, we can discuss the necessary requirements for their participation during the intake process.

How do I register for a spot?

Registration will follow a two-phase approach:

  1. Internal Families First: Families currently accessing YWCA Cambridge child care services will have access to registration first.
  2. External Registration: Spots will then be offered to external families seeking summer camp opportunities on a first-come, first-served basis.
What are the fees?

While fees are finalized annually, we anticipate a minimal increase for the 2026 season for children who do not fall under the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) eligibility. For children aged 6-12, the weekly increase is projected to be in the range of $5-$10 per week, and this rate will include extended day hours (7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.).

Why are there two weeks with no camps offered?

We have two scheduled closures to ensure quality and preparedness across our child care department:

  • Late June/Early July: This closure is essential for a department-wide break for our dedicated educators and allows our rental locations to complete a deep clean before the summer program begins.
  • Last Week of August: This week is designated for school setup. It allows for a final deep clean and gives school staff access to their classrooms to prepare for the academic year.
