Thanks to the generosity of our community, YWCA Cambridge officially opened its Women’s Emergency Homeless Shelter on February 24, 2025—This vital space now provides safety, dignity, and wraparound supports for women experiencing homelessness in our community.
But we’ve created more than a shelter. We’re building a community—a place where women experiencing what is often the worst, most traumatic time of their lives are finding space to regroup and rebuild their lives. For many, it’s the first time in a long time they’ve felt safe, welcomed, and believed in.
One resident, who has since moved on to the next chapter of her life, shared:
“I love how my bed is set up, and I’m sharing the space with three other beautiful women. This shelter has done so much for me. Now, I feel ready to move forward—and that’s a really nice feeling.”

Because of You, We’ve Already Made an Impact
Since opening, we’ve provided:
- 100+ safe bed nights
- 3 nutritious meals a day, prepared by our Food Services Coordinator
- 38 women and gender-diverse individuals with emergency shelter
- 24/7 care from trauma-informed staff
A counsellor who works with residents has shared:
“The shelter provides vital resources, safety, and stability—and more than that, it creates space for women to build community, find belonging, and take steps toward a brighter, self-directed future.”
Small Moments, Big Meaning
At YWCA Cambridge, we know it’s not just about providing a bed, it’s about helping residents reclaim their sense of agency, pride, and community. Here are just a couple of powerful moments from our first few months:
Walking for Wellness
Last month, several residents proudly joined Porchlight Counselling and Addiction Services for the Cambridge Moves for Mental Health walk. It was more than a community event—it was a statement of healing and hope. Walking side-by-side with staff and neighbours, they showed up not just for themselves, but for mental health awareness across our city. For many, it was a chance to be seen, to belong, and to be part of something bigger than their circumstances.
Making Their Voices Count
On election day, a group of shelter residents made their way to the polls—several of them voting for the very first time. Supported by staff, they navigated the process with excitement and pride. One resident said, “I never thought my voice mattered. But today, I voted—and it felt amazing.” Moments like these remind us that helping a person restore or rediscover their agency can be just as powerful as providing shelter.
This is Just the Beginning
