In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the YWCA Cambridge Women of Distinction awards, we’re highlighting recipients from over three decades of celebrating ordinary women doing extraordinary things.
Ilidia Sa Melo
Woman of Distinction award recipient in the category of nonprofit or public service, 2015
In every corner of our communities, there are unsung heroes tirelessly working to uplift and empower others. Meet Ilidia Sa Melo, a woman whose dedication to serving others has left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
At the time of her recognition, Ilidia was working as a deputy Clerk while also volunteering for the Cambridge chapter of Zonta—an organization committed to advancing the status of women worldwide. Her win was not just a personal triumph but a realization of the responsibility that came with it.
“I realized the responsibility of taking that and helping move other women forward,” she said. In her leadership role, she made it her mission to support and uplift the women under her supervision, encouraging them to advance in their careers.
Carrying on the mission of Women of Distinction, Ilidia was a board member for KW Counselling and continues to welcome other women working in municipal government to reach out to her for any wisdom or advice she can provide.
Offering words of wisdom to women everywhere, Ilidia emphasizes the importance of recognizing one’s strengths.
“When people compliment you and tell you what your strengths are, don’t take it for granted. Really warm up to the idea that they are reflecting back what maybe you struggle to see in yourself. If it’s something you’re really good at and you enjoy doing, then move forward with that.”
Ilidia understands the vital importance of organizations like YWCA Cambridge, particularly in smaller cities and communities. She recognizes the invaluable support and resources they provide, helping to reduce isolation and empower women to overcome systemic and personal barriers while fostering leadership and self confidence.
“It’s so good for your heart and your soul when you’re out there helping and uplifting women,” said Ilidia.
“Everyone is more powerful than they give themselves credit for. Owning that power—our self-worth, our ability to make a difference—is how we create a better community.”
