Released today, A Feminist Economic Recovery Plan for Canada: Making the Economy Work for Everyone,  a report co-authored by the Institute for Gender and the Economy (GATE) at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and YWCA Canada, offers an 8-point Plan to tackle systemic barriers and improve economic security for women, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people.

The Plan proposes 8 major recommendations to build Canada’s economy back better, so that it becomes more inclusive and ultimately more resilient for future crises.

YWCA Cambridge was a reviewer of the Plan, and has endorsed it.

“The pandemic has been devastating for many communities across Canada, and we know the impacts are felt greatest among communities made most marginalized by current systems – cis and trans women and girls, non-binary individuals, especially those who are Black and Indigenous,” said Kim Decker, Executive Director of YWCA Cambridge.

“What we’re being presented with now, however, is an opportunity to completely rethink what kind of economy we want. Now is our chance to build an economy that leaves no one behind. This means, as the report outlines, taking an intersectional approach, addressing systemic racism and investing in care work such as child care.”
