CAMBRIDGE – The Galt Cambridge Lions Club is encouraging community members to take advantage of the extension of the charitable giving donation deadline, which the federal government has extended to February 28, by matching all donations to YWCA Cambridge up to $10,000.

“The Galt Cambridge Lions Club has been supporting the local community since 1938 and we take great pride in providing this $10,000 matching donation to the YWCA for the first Women’s Emergency Homeless Shelter in Cambridge,” said Secretary-Treasurer of Galt Cambridge Lions Club, Richard Green.

“Our members fully support YWCA’s initiative, wish them good luck and thank them for their hard work and dedication to this worthy endeavour.”

YWCA Cambridge is gearing up to open the first women’s emergency homeless shelter in Cambridge. The shelter will be temporarily located in the basement of Grace Bible Church, which the Region of Waterloo has agreed to renovate. Operating funding will also be provided by the Region of Waterloo. YWCA is raising funds to help furnish and outfit the shelter with essential items like linens, towels, and personal care items to meet the needs of women staying at the 20-bed, 24/7 shelter.

“Thank you to Galt Cambridge Lions Club for their generous support. By matching every donation from now until February 28, they are helping to double the impact of each and every donation, perhaps even encouraging those who might not have otherwise donated, to give,” said YWCA Cambridge CEO, Kim Decker.

Galt Cambridge Lions Club’s generous matching donation of $10,000 comes after Greentec partnered with YWCA Cambridge on their end of year fundraising campaign which was also directed at the shelter. Inspired by Greentec, Soroptomist International of Cambridge added another $10,000 in matching donations. Since November, 2024, YWCA Cambridge has raised more than $150,000 to support the outfitting and operations of the women’s emergency homeless shelter downtown Cambridge.
